Girl on Fireplace: Cafe Images

Remember a few months ago when I had some of my work hanging in a local cafe? We got a lot of compliments on the images we displayed there. Well I never did put those images online. Here's one of my favorites-and their favorites:

Isn't she adorable?

Further proof that you don't have to have a person look into the camera to create a compelling photo.

Sneak Peek: Cole

Today I met 14 year old Cole. While not thrilled to have his picture taken, he obliged and smiled at my lens while I clicked away unendingly. He was a good sport and we got some great shots! Here is one of them:

Just Like Dad session: Steffens

Another lovely session from our "Just Like Dad: Father's Day Mini Shoot" day. This is little guy loves sports, his baseball cap, saying hi to everyone and his parents. In fact, this little guy was so polite that he had to say hello to everyone before we could begin--how cute is that?!?!?!

I just did their View and Choose session this afternoon and he wanted to make sure his mom didn't forget her flipflops...so he handed them to her! So cute!!

He's the kind of little boy that just makes you smile when you see him!
He has got to be one of the happiest little kids I have had the pleasure of working with!

To see the rest of this little guy's photos, check out the full preview album here.

About a Family

A few months ago I was making a storyboard for one of my clients. In that storyboard I used a quote that I fell in love with from the first time I read it:

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family.” -Anthony Brandt

This is one of the reason I love family portraits so much. When all is said and done it is our families that are always there for us, who shape and define us, who raise us and challenge us, and are there to pick up the pieces when everything seems to be broken.

Capturing those moments of a young, growing family is so important to me. Years down the road every member of the families I photograph will look back at those capture moments and remember the fun they had that day.

Sometimes photos are taken outside by a grassy field or by a pond. Other times they may be taken while playing a game of catch, mini golf, splatter painting the kids’ rooms, and even in a studio setting. There are so many great ways to take professional family portraits that really illustrate each individual family’s life together.

When planning for your family portraits choose a setting that is comfortable and familiar for your family. Familiar settings will mean even more to you years down the road. Using a favorite family activity in your photos will always remind you of the special times you shared doing that activity (badminton, frisbee, volleyball, hiking, canoeing, picnicking, painting, horseback riding, flying a kite, etc) over the years. Wear clothing that you are comfortable in. If you like dressing up, go for it. If your more of jeans and tee shirt people, go with that. The more you look like yourself, the better.

The more comfortable you are, the more your photos will look like you. It will not look stiff or posed or faked. Plan your family portrait shoot to bring out the real you. Your family will shine when you are the way you love to be together. Talk to you photographer. They will ask you questions about you and your family and help you plan the perfect location and the best outfits to wear. Not to mention they will be so far and above the posed, stiff photos you get from places like the studios in the mall with the fake background and everyone sitting on chairs. By the time a professional photog finishes with your session you will have fallen in love and will never go back to the mall studios!!
